If you love sewing as much as I do, you know the joy of taking a pattern and making it your own. Recently, I decided to sew a flowy top using Simplicity Pattern 9951, and it turned into another loved project that will get lots of wear. This project was fun and easy to sew! Let’s dive into the details.
Sewing Pattern Used
For this project, I used Simplicity Pattern 9951. This pattern is a flowy top with a deep V-neckline design that carries through to the back of the top, and gathers at the front and back. It also has self-ties at the back, adding a nice detail that gives the top a romantic, boho vibe. There are three views to choose from:
View A: Features an optional lace trim finish, perfect for adding a delicate touch.
View B: Has a contrast design, giving the top a modern twist.
View C: This is the view I chose to sew! It’s a classic style, perfect for everyday wear, and the flowy design makes it comfortable and chic.
Sizing: This pattern offers a range of sizes from 8 to 26. I personally cut a size 16, which worked perfectly with a few small adjustments for fit.
Fabric Used
I chose a lightweight cotton voile in a soft floral print from Mood Fabrics (I do not believe this print is still available). The fabric's drape worked perfectly with the flowy design of Simplicity 9951, ensuring that the gathers fell beautifully around the waistline.
Sewing Tools and Notions Used
Here’s a quick rundown of the tools and notions I used:
Sewing Machine: I used my trusty Baby Lock Accomplish 2 machine for all the sewing. It handled the lightweight fabric like a champ!
Scissors & Rotary Cutter: Essential for cutting out the fabric pieces precisely.
Pins and Clips: To hold the fabric in place while sewing.
Matching Thread: I used a great quality polyester thread to ensure durability. The thread you use can make or break your project.
Seam Ripper: Because we all know mistakes happen, and it’s better to be prepared!
Tips and Tricks
Gathers: To create even gathers, sew two rows of basting stitches (one inside the seam allowance and one outside), then gently pull the bobbin threads to gather the fabric. This technique makes it easier to distribute the gathers evenly. You can also gather using a 3/8" elastic, measuring the width of the upper bodice hem, and cutting your elastic that length. You will then pin the elastic to both ends of the lower bodice, and stitch the elastic to the bodice while pulling to ensure the elastic is stretched and stitch the full length of the lower bodice.
V-Neckline: When sewing the V-neckline, take your time to ensure it lies flat. Staystitch around the neckline before attaching the facing to prevent it from stretching out of shape.
Finishing Touches: If you’re using a lightweight fabric like cotton voile or chiffon, you can consider adding a lining to the dress to prevent it from being too sheer. I did not add a lining to mine because I planned to wear a cami under it. I like to keep certain dresses and tops sheer, so that you can wear them over swimwear during summer vacations. Keeping it sheer allows for styling versatility.
For the hem: I recommend a narrow rolled hem to keep the flowy feel of the fabric. If that proves to be difficult, you can hem using a bias tape to create a bias bound hem as well.

My Final Thoughts
Simplicity Pattern 9951 is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to create a stylish yet comfortable and breezy top. If you have never used this pattern before, do make sure to double check the sizing and fit with a muslin. The mistake of cutting this pattern too big is quite easy to do, and we do not want the shoulder slipping as you are wearing it. I definitely see myself sewing more versions of this top. Next year though, because Atlanta is coming through with this fall weather lol.
Over Labor Day weekend, I went on a short trip with my family to one of our favorite places to visit, Chattanooga, Tennesse, and I was all too excited to wear my new top while I was there. We spent a little time downtown exploring and stopping in local shops to try out some yummy treats. It was truly a great time. I was very warm there, but this top kept me feeling breezy and comfortable. I hope this project inspires you to get creative with your sewing patterns and make something uniquely yours!
