Busy Minding My Purpose: The Story Behind the Brand

ree

“It is simply saying yes to what God created you to do—with your hands, your heart, and your whole life. It’s not about titles or applause. It’s about obedience, impact, and being faithful with what’s in front of you.”

That’s purpose. And if you ask me, that kind of purpose will change your life.

Back in 2020, when the world shut down and sewing, baking, and home DIY became everybody’s favorite hobbies, my husband walked into the kitchen and asked me what I was doing. Without even looking up, I said, “I’m busy minding my purpose.”

He stopped in his tracks like I had just said something profound. “Baby, that’s really good. You should use that.”

At the time, I smiled, but I didn’t move. You see, what he didn’t know was that behind that quick-witted reply, I was battling a storm. My old friends anxiety and depression had quietly returned, uninvited. And while the world was wrestling with a pandemic, I was quietly trying to hold myself together. But in the middle of all that chaos, God gave me something that became my lifeline, sewing and sharing messages of hope.

Purpose Looks Different, But It’s Meant for Everyone

Whether you’re a mom wiping little noses, a dad working two jobs, a college student searching for direction, or a business owner trying to hold it all together—purpose is for you.

Purpose isn’t about being famous. It’s not about having a blue checkmark or going viral. It’s not even about having it all figured out. Purpose is obedience. It’s impact. It’s being faithful with what’s right in front of you; your gifts, your voice, your influence, no matter how big or small.

Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.”

That means He already planned your purpose. Your job isn’t to create it—it’s to walk in it. And that’s what this brand is all about.

The Turning Point: A Real Conversation with God

I’ll be honest. For a long time, I had no problem pushing other people toward their goals, but I struggled to believe in my own. I masked fear with contentment. I convinced myself that where I was, was “enough.” And while I was grateful, deep down, I knew I wasn’t striving anymore—I was just surviving.

One day I broke down and prayed, “God, I know you’ve given me gifts, but I feel lost. I don’t know how to use them.” That’s when I heard Him say something I’ll never forget:

“My child, you can’t say you believe in Me and not believe in yourself. How can you believe in the Creator but not believe in what He created?”

😮‍💨 Talk about a holy mic drop. I sat with that for a long time. Like a “don’t-talk-to-me-I’m-processing” kind of sit. I realized I was still letting past trauma (childhood wounds and adult failures) shape how I saw myself. But God? He saw something greater.

A Funny Little Delay (Because What’s a Faith Story Without One?)

Now listen, even after God gave me that word, I still moved slow. My husband kept saying, “Put your words on something!” I’d nod like, “Yup, I hear you,” and then proceed to do… nothing.

One day he said, “So are you gonna do it, or should I start Busy Minding My Purpose myself, and put my face on the hoodie?” (side eye).

Sir! The audacity. But that joke? That lit a fire in me. I got up, checked trademarks, created an LLC, hired a lawyer, designed my first tee, and started running. Because purpose doesn’t sit still. And neither could I anymore.

I started the brand last year in 2024, and man was I grateful for the support from so many people who believed in my mission and the brand. I am so thankful to those who believed in me enough to support this small business.

Grief, Grace, and Getting Back Up

During the first year of launching my business, life knocked the wind out of me—my dad passed away. And not just any dad… my best friend. We talked every day, so losing him felt like someone ripped a part of my routine and my heart away. I had no idea how heavy grief could feel until I was living in it.

I didn’t handle it well at first. I shut everything down, my business, my creativity, my focus. I stayed busy with anything that didn’t require me to sit still long enough to feel the weight of it all. But grief doesn’t disappear just because we try to outrun it.

Eventually, I had a heart-to-heart with Jesus. I had to. It was the only way through. And in that sacred space, He began to heal what I tried to hide.

Now, I’m back—with renewed vision and a heart that’s ready to build what I promised my dad I would. I believe in myself again. And more than ever, I trust what God is doing in my life, and the purpose He has created me for.
